Hughes Creek Preserve/Little Mountain Trails

PLEASE READ THIS IF YOU RIDE ON LITTLE MOUNTAIN TRAILS

Polk County's environmental contractors are performing substantial work at the former landfill site on Little Mountain. This work will continue approximately 18 months. The site will be extremely dangerous during that time, with earth moving, logging, holes and pits created and unsound footing. It is NOT safe for riding or walking.

The trails on the County's property will be closed during that time. No exceptions. Violators subject to trespassing prosecution.

Signs, caution tape, gates and temporary fencing will be erected. PLEASE follow these directions for your own safety. In addition, our future riding privileges in the area will depend on our community's cooperation with the County's legitimate needs to keep people off the site.

Over the next week or so we will be working to re-route the trails, and will try to have them routed so that you will not have to turn around but can flow around the area. People knowing the area well and willing to help with this effort would be appreciated. Please let me know if you can help.

So far, these are the definite changes.

- Entrance from Little Mountain Road near Golf Course Road: CLOSED. Detour: Follow Golf Course Road to Mike's Trail on left, cross Little Mountain Road and enter Hughes Creek Preserve's Bridge Trail at the Covered Bridge. DO NOT ENTER THE HUGHES CREEK PRESERVE MAIN ENTRANCE. This is NOT a trail, and riders have already ruined much of their landscaping and sprinkler system. The main road is not a trail. Trails in Hughes Creek are clearly marked FETA. Preservation Trail and Bridge Trail start at the first road to the right within Hughes Creek

- Entrance from East (Burgundy Lane, Orchard) gravel construction road to the right as you come up to the trail along the road is CLOSED. This Road leads to County Property. Detour to be established.

- Do not ride on Williams Mountain Loop Trail Road. This is not a trail, It is blocked by a gate. The land falls off steeply and is not safe to go around the gate. No detour for Williams Mountain Loop at this time.

- The trails on the far eastern side of the County's property are still opened. The closings will be marked, but if they are torn down please use good sense. If you see any construction equipment or evidence of work, you should not be there. As FETA landowners, the County and Hughes Creek Preserve expects us to enforce FETA rules regarding no riding on closed trails. Please do not jeopardize your FETA membership by trespassing where you are not permitted.

And remember that our future riding privileges will depend on our cooperation.

If you have any questions or can help with the re-routing and marking of the trails to facilitate riding, please let me know.

Thanks for your cooperation. Dot
